The Partygoers ~December 2016 Sephora Play!~

Here it is, the final subscription box review of 2016, in 2017. It's gonna take me awhile to get back into the swing of writing and reading again. I'm really working on it because one of my goals for the year is to focus on this blog. I'm working on redesigning everything and really getting my act together. Like I said I have big things planned for us this year. For now though let's relive the month of December in the form of my all time favorite subscription box, Sephora Play!

Lancome Hypnose Drama Instant Full Body Volume Mascara (Full-size $27.50): Does anyone really like this mascara? I've always been kind of eh on Lancome mascaras in general. I'm jealous that the other box variation got the Bobbi Brown Smokey mascara because I've heard it's a wonder in a tube. This has an S shaped wand and I never thought it did a good job at defining my lashes. I'm picky with mascara's so I need definition and body. Not so much length because I've got that, but body definition and some curling power is really all I want. This does clumps and for some reason I get it everywhere. I haven't used it in awhile, so I'll give it another shot, but I'm not optimistic. Past Grade: D

Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer (Full-size $37): I actually had this sample size in my cart to buy during VIB and ended up deciding against it. I'm actually really glad I did because this sample is not worth the $17 price tag they were going to be charging me. I do kind of like it though. It reminds me of Benefit's Porefessional, which has a tint and kind of melts into your skin. I feel like this one keeps me a bit more matte than the Porefessional, so I would choose this over that. I'm almost done with my sample already. Final Grade: B+

Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo (Full-size $23): When I first tried this dry shampoo years ago I loved it. My second time around I still love it, but it's not worth the money. It does leave a huge white cast, so brunettes beware. Pro tip: Batiste dry shampoo in Floral (the pink can) smells the same, and does a better job for less than a quarter of the price. Something to think about. Final Grade: B

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray (Full-size $31): Another product I've tried in the past and know how I feel about it. They recently relaunched All Nighter in newer packaging, which there was nothing wrong with the old packaging, so I'm not disappointed that we got the old style in this box. For me and my skin this is one of the best setting sprays I've ever used. I hope the formula hasn't changed just because they changed the packaging. Probably not, but it's something to think about. Final Grade: B+

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in Always Red (Full-size $14): I'm kind of mad because I wanted to try the cream lip stains so badly that I bought a set of 4 minis during the VIB sale. I rather like them and I was happy that there was another one coming in this box, but a little disappointed because this was one of the colors in my kit. Not much I can do about it, but I'm glad to have an extra. I really like these! They're so easy to apply and I don't feel like they dry my lips out at all. This is also a gorgeous Sephora red. Oh and total plus they stay on ALL DAY! Like for reals through eating, drinking, even a Greek salad. Oh yeah they're that good. Final Grade: A-
Top: Cream Lip Stain in Always Red Bottom:
European Wax Center Brow Highlight (Allure 12/16)

Fragrance of the Month: Elizabeth & James Nirvana Rose (Full-size $25-85): I'm not sure what it is about these E&J fragrances that is so magical. I love the Black version of Nirvana, as well as the Bourbon and this is just as great. I'm not sure I love it as much as Bourbon. The only thing I hate is it has that very strong rose scent as its second layer of notes, just alittle much for me, but I still like it. Final Grade: A-

And that's all folks, my last box of the year and truly a goodie! Here's to 2017 Sephora, we shall meet again!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
