My Final Two Allure Beauty Boxes ~November & December 2016~

Info: I wrote this mid-December. I know I'm a terrible blogger

Because I'm lazy and don't particularly care about this box anymore November and December will be combined. We're waist deep in the holiday season and I'm feeling cheerful, but not cheerful enough for me to write two separate posts. Plus neither of them are that exciting. So here we go the last two months of Allure.

November- Party Central

Red Flower Icelandic Moonflower Moisturizing Body Lotion (Full-size $26): This smelled like a very heavy floral, it kind of smelled like lilac's, but not enough that I wanted to throw it across the room. It was very thick though, I had a hard time getting it out of tube, but nothing a couple of shakes couldn't fix. It was a decent lotion, but I was happy to get rid of it. I'm picky when it comes to body lotion. Final Grade: C+

Bulgaria Omnia Crystalline (Full-size $82): Alright, this time around I knew how to open the bottle. I liked the coral version of the Omnia that we got in September, but this one is by far more my style. It's more masculine and woodsy instead of the sweet floral that comes from the coral. I think it's way too expensive for me to ever dream of buying this, because I don't like it that much. Final Grade: B

Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Eyeliner (Full-size $20): So this is my fourth Eyeko liner. I now have 3 liquids and a waterproof pencil that's super intense. I have used none of them. I'm not super good with eyeliner, but to me it's similar to the skinny liquid liner. I found no difference in swatching, and the only difference I can find in description is that this one is waterproof. Final Grade: TBD

Bonvivant Botanical Mask Pack (Full-size $3): Sheet masks are my jam and I'm not gonna lie this one was pretty fantastic. I read somewhere that this mask is actually valued at a dollar and not three. I'm cool with that being a buck because it was worth it. My skin felt so incredibly soft the morning after using this and my makeup just applied better. There was some serum leftover, but nothing too incredibly sticky. Final Grade: B+

Eau Thermal Avène Hydrance Optimale Rich Hydrating Cream (Full-size $32): I'm too behind on moisturizers to even try this. Nothing new, you get this same spiel every month when I get a new moisturizer. Final Grade: TBD

Klorane Shampoo with Essential Olive Extract (Full-size $15): While I do like Klorane as a brand, I am totally over getting them as samples. The good news is that this sample is huge, over 3 ozs and it's a decent shampoo. I haven't noticed it adding any thickness to my hair, and I would notice that because my hair is extremely thin, but I haven't. It cleans my hair and will last a long time, so its a win. Final Grade: B

December: The Big Chill

Coastal Salt & Soul Heavenly Hand Cream in Ocean Gardenia (Full-size $10): This is actually a full-size hand cream and its not bad. Am I happy about getting another hand cream in this box? No, but at least this one is reasonably priced. The scent is sweet and sugary, not my favorite type of scent. It does a nice job at moisturizing though. Final Grade: B-

European Wax Center Oh My Brow Brow Highlighter (Full-size $19): I kind of think brow specific highlighters are a waste of money because you can always just use a shadow or a highlighter on your brow bone, but this one is nice. I like how subtle it is and I enjoy that it's a full-size. I've heard of European Wax Centers before (via T advertisements), but I had no idea they made actual brow products. I haven't quite worked this into my daily makeup routine, because specific brow highlighter was never a part of my daily routine, but maybe one day. It's good to have on hand. Final Grade: B-

Tula Advanced Neck Cream (Full-size $80): I have never used a neck specific cream and I've been using it for about a week now. I can't really tell any difference. I typically bring skincare down the neck anyways, so in terms of softness or whatnot there's no difference. I can tell you that I would never pay full price for this item. 80 bucks is way too much money for a cream, when there are comparable items out there.  Final Grade: C

Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentrate (Full-size $28): I've always wanted to try this, but I've been nervous too because I know that it's very moisturizing. I've read that most celeb makeup artists keep this in their kit and use it on clients, so I decided to use it as a base a couple of times. I used it with and without a mattifying primer. I can't say that I've noticed any dramatic difference in my makeup staying power or my application. I'm happy to use the rest of the sample, but I don't think this moisturizer is for me. Final Grade: C

Beautyblender Liquid Blendercleanser (Full-size $30): I use the Beautyblender solid cleanser and I have for a couple of years now. Hopefully the liquid works well. My brushes and sponges are in desperate need of a cleaning. For realsies they're incredibly dirty. Final Grade: TBD

Eau Thermale Avene Body Oil (Full-size $26): I believe this was the extra item in my box this month, but I'm still unsure on that. I've been mixing this in with my night lotion, because I feel like putting this on by itself doesn't go very well. It sinks into the skin and you're not getting much movement. I've never much liked oils for my body, but I did use an oil based serum once that was fantastic and I still wish I could have that back. I'm just not overly into this product and I wouldn't consider buying a full-size. I'll just use this (very generous) sized sample up and then move on with my life. Final Grade: C

Nothing was life changing for me in this box. Everything was just kind of blah. I have definitely decided to cancel this box because it just didn't live up to the hype. Even though January's box looks pretty freaking fantastic. I don't want to fall into the trap that it pulled me into with the May box and then simply not deliver. Hopefully they honor my request to cancel. I think my one major gripe about this box was that there wasn't enough brand variation. We just need more than the same 3 brands repeated monthly Allure!  I will be doing a roundup of my year with subscription boxes very soon, as well as my year in books. Which I'm going to be honest wasn't as exciting as 2015, but I'm hoping 2017 will be much better for me. That's all for now.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
