Effortless Summer ~July 2016 Sephora Play~

We didn't get spoilers for this month's box until right before it shipped out. I'm not 100℅ sure of that reason, other than to torture us. The only clue we did have is possible spoilers and word that they were splitting up the boxes according to skin type (combo/oily, normal/dry). Knowing that I filled out my profile for oily skin and that even on my beauty insider profile (Sephora's rewards program) I'm listed as oily I didnt worry about which box I'd get. Until I checked my Play subscription and I got the normal/dry box. So yeah, here it goes...

First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser (Full-size $20): This is something I've used before and currently own a full size of. This is a nice face wash. I like it during the winter to use after a workout. It removes my surface oils and dirt, but doesn't strip your skin. It's a bit like soap, so if you're not into facial soaps I would skip. I passed this sample along because I honestly didn't need it. Final Grade: C

Ouai Wave Spray (Full-size $26): Another Kardashian branded product. While not made by them, but their hairstylist Jen Atkins. I was so excited to try this, even though I need another sea salt spray like more debt. I'm not gonna lie it's pretty good. I've been using it on my second day curls to review and pump them up. It doesn't do much for frizz, but it's not bad. The smell is very perfumey, but I like it. It actually smells like a perfume I used to wear religiously in college (Masaki Masaki), so that's probably why. I'm not sure if it's worth the price, but it's a nice texture mist without any of the grit like a traditional sea salt spray. Final Grade: B

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (Full-size $36): I think we all know how I feel about getting this primer in subscription boxes. I'm super jealous that the other box got the pore minimizing version, which I never see given out in boxes. I'm upset that two different boxes gave this out this month. Coordinate people! Final Grade: F

beautyblender blotterazzi (Full-size $20): This is just kind of like... why? I understand you split the boxes us for skin type, but I don't think people with dry skin would use this. I don't even have dry skin and I have not used it. I washed it, but it's still sitting in the box where I've put all the other samples for this month. Final Grade: Who Cares

Bonus: We got a little packet of the beautyblender liquid cleanser, which I haven't tried yet, so I've got that going for me.

Benefit Dew the Hoola Soft Matte Liquid Bronzer (Full-size $28): I have wanted to try this, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I really enjoyed the last liquid bronzer we got (last month!), So I'm sure this will be up there. It looks very orange out of the tube, but blended it seems fine. I think this will work because I'll probably mix it with another foundation. Final Grade: TBD

Fragrance of the Month: Nest Fragrances in Citrine (Full-size $25-$68): This smells so good! I really do like this and it's almost gone, but it doesn't last. The scent just doesn't stick around for more than an hour tops. Which means I won't be buying the full size. It's so light and perfect for summer though. I like how refreshing it is and if it lasted I would be buying a full-size. They do have some sets with this on Sephora, so if you're looking to try I'd probably go with the set instead of a full-size of this. Unless you're looking for that barely there fragrance.

Not super impressed for my second Sephora Play box. I think if I had gotten the box for my skin type I would've been happy, but again I probably wouldn't of because I already had chocolate soleil and the red clay cleanser. I just wish they did a better job of paying attention to profiles because mine did say oily, not even combination. Spoilers are up for next month and everything looks great, so let's hope that stays on track. I think I'll probably keep this for the rest of the year and then determine whether or not it's for me in December. If I had to go on June and July I would cancel. Sorry not sorry. That's all for now.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
