Wake Up Call ~ August 2016 Allure Beauty Box~

I feel like my Allure box got here really quickly this month. Although they ship out in the first week of the month, this has been my first experience with that. I was terribly excited when the spoilers got released because there was one item I was dying to try and the rest was just great extras. Unfortunately they came out later and said that the one item I wanted wasn't going to be in every box, but some people would be getting it. I wasn't one of those people, naturally. We did get extra products though, so I guess that is a win? Probably not, but I guess you can judge that along with me.

Freeze 24-7 Anti-Aging Eye Serum (Full-size $115): Holy bejeezus this is expensive. I'm not sure why I keep getting unbelievably expensive items in my boxes, but it seems to be a theme. If this stuff performs miracles for my ever aging under eyes I would consider buying it, but I still probably wouldn't. I won't be trying this for awhile anyways since I have too many eye creams open at the moment. It does get good reviews though. Final Grade: TBD

Pur-Lisse Blue Lotus Balancing Moisturizer (Full-size $55): I'm currently using the other Pur-Lisse moisturizer we got in the June box. That isn't my favorite moisturizer, I find it quite tacky, so I'm not excited to try the non-SPF version of it. This also won't get opened because again I have way too many moisturizers floating around. Final Grade: TBD

Cargo Swimmables Eye Pencil in Pebble Beach (Full-size $18): The picture in the spoilers shows this in a box, so I'm assuming it's full-size; however mine was just floating around inside my box. Cargo is kind of hit and miss for me, especially the swimmables line, but I really like this liner. I have it swatched on my hand currently and it hasn't budged for 4 hours and I've washed my hands and used sanitizer. I also like that it's black/brown rather than just black. I have a good feeling about this. I think we can be friends. Final Grade: B+

Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 (Full-size $28): I actually own a deluxe size version of this, bigger than this sample and I'm not a huge fan of it. The mist is just ridiculous and it never seems to get on my face. Hopefully this one fairs a bit better. I want to like this because it's supposed to be matte although I've never seen any mattifying properties on my skin. Final Grade: C-

E.L.F. Small Stipple Brush ($3): This product is actually a variation on the Mally Eye Bright that was supposed to be in everyone's box. So if you didn't get the Mally you either got a product from Pixi, Burberry, or E.L.F. While I love E.L.F. this is actually a brush I already own. I also think that's kind of crappy that you could get either high end, mid-range, fancy drugstore, or $3 product. Aside from the obvious that I didn't want this brush, it is a fantastic tool. My favorite use for it is for liquid highlight and colourpop blushes/highlighters. Final Grade: A (but not for the it being in my box rather that it's just a good brush to have)

Wet Brush Midi Brush in Silver ($8.99): Another full-size item! Yay! I love Wet brushes, they are fantastic. If you have easily tangled, curly, or thick hair you need this brush in your life. I don't own the full-size, but I do have 2 of the minis that I use for travel and for after the shower. This comes highly recommended by me and I've had friends who have bought this based on that recommendation. So happy to have another to add to my collection and the color is so pretty! Final Grade: A+

Extras: There were 2 items not listed in the little magazine that came with the box and that's the Garnier Whole Blends Shampoo & Conditioner in Honey Treasures. As far as I can tell we all got the same variety of shampoo and conditioner. It smells really good and I have wanted to try the Whole Blends line, so I'll actually be using this this weekend. Okay fine Allure you impressed me.

This box was a HUGE miss for me, but I am excited that I got another (bigger) Wet brush and the eyeliner seems promising. I'll certainly be passing the E.L.F. brush along to a friend who would really like it. I'm just kind of overloaded on everything at the moment, so it's getting a bit harder for me to try samples if they aren't makeup samples. Hopefully next month goes a bit better. Let's just say this went better than Birchbox did this month. That's all for now!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
