The Eye Openers ~Sephora Play! August 2016~

This is my second time writing this post and I'm not happy about it. I had originally written it on my phone and then Blogger froze and deleted EVERYTHING! I was finished with the post (sans pictures) and that damn app upset me, grrr. So now here I am again writing this post, which is hopefully as fabulous as the first post that I had written.

Makeup Forever Artist Eyeshadow & Powder Blush I544 Pink Granite (Full-size $21): You can use this as a blush? Hmm I'm not sure I would want this color on my cheeks, but that's good to know for future purchases. I'm very impressed by this shadow. Again, I've never used MUFE shadows before and this was just perfect. It doesn't swatch particularly well, its a glittery taupe that leans pink, but you really do need to build it up. I haven't tried it layered over a cream shadow, but I think it will be perfect for that. I'm also happy that we are able to depot this and stick it in a palette. Much appreciation Sephora! Final Grade: A-
I have the shadow labeled as Pink Graffiti, and it is in fact Pink
Granite. Which makes a whole lot more sense.
Sephora Collection Eye Contour 12hr Wear Waterproof in Flirting Game (Full-size $10): I think my only disappointment with this sample is that it isn't full-size. No worries about that though because I fully intend on buying a full-size. This sets very quickly though, so if you plan on smudging (like I typically do) be sure to work quickly. If you have fairer skin and lighter lashes, I think this would be great to tightline with. I haven't tried that yet, but I might soon. Final Grade: A+

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (Full-size $22): The first time I used this mascara I loved it, then I used it a second and a third time and it was just okay. I like that it doesn't take much of a build-up because it's super black and does a nice fan effect. I don't like that the brush is rather large and the tube rather small, creating an excess of product at the top of the tube. That would be a concern of mine if I were to purchase a full-size. Luckily I'm so overstocked on mascaras sample or full-size that I won't need to think about that for awhile. It is a nice mascara, but I'm not a very good judge on mascara because I have longed curled lashes to begin with. The most important thing I look for is definition and this does a great job of that. Final Grade: B+

Caudalie Resveratrol Lift Eye Lifting Balm (Full-size $62): Yay another eye cream that I won't be using for months! This is my second experience with a Caudalie eye cream and if it goes anything like the first I will love this! I've also never tried an eye balm, so that's an interesting concept to me. I've used it once, but that's not a good enough for me to judge. Hopefully it does all of the anti-aging claims because Mama's got some wrinkles. Final Grade: TBD
Lancome Energie de Vie The Smoothing & Glow Boosting Liquid Moisturizer (Full-size $55): What's with all of these ridiculously long names? I've never delved into Lancome much in terms of skincare, I believe this is the first product I've tried from them. Again I've only used it once, but when they say liquid they mean liquid. It poured out of the little tube and I think I may have used too much. I didn't see any "glow", but I did like the smoothness and there wasn't as much oil on my skin as there typically is when I woke up, so I'm interested to see how this performs during the day. Final Grade: TBD

Fragrance of the Month: CLEAN Reserve Blonde Wood (Full-size $90)
Another winning fragrance of the month Sephora! This smells so good! OMG I want a full-size of this, but it's expensive. Hopefully they have a rollerball or plan on coming out with one. This reminds me of my favorite (discontinued!) fragrance ever, which is Boyfriend by Kate Walsh, only there's top notes of floral in there. I've really enjoyed this fragrance and it's almost gone, so guess I'll have to start saving my pennies for a full-size. Final Grade: A

What a fabulous box! Sephora absolutely killed it this month and is my new favorite beauty box. This was the first month that I truly loved everything and I will use everything. I think my favorite thing was the eyeliner. I've used Sephora eyeliners for years, and I'm so excited that this color is fantastic! Who would've thought that a taupe eyeliner was what was missing from my life all these years. Spoilers for next month are up and the theme is "The Unbasic Basics". In all honestly that isn't a very exciting theme to me, it seems very similar to July's theme of "The Minimalists". There's also another eyeliner in that box, which isn't very enticing. I think Sephora is doing a great job, but they need a better curation and variety. Hopefully it ends up like this month because it was awesome and I will be dreaming about this box for weeks to come. That's all for now!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
