June 2016 Empties!

Some people do empty videos on YouTube and G does it on her beauty blog Nouveau Cheap, so maybe I'll try it. You never know how much stuff you use up, until you save your beauty trash for a month and it's a lot! Currently July is going the same way, but hopefully August won't? Who knows. Enjoy short mini reviews of my beautiful trash...

Hair
Batiste Floral & Flirty Dry Shampoo: I'm going to be honest there is nothing that works better, smells better, or is cheaper than this dry shampoo! This is the exact same scent of Drybar's dry shampoo, but it works better. I will never stop using this brand. I buy it in bulk and am currently working on the tropical scent.

Not Your Mother's Deja Vu Do Sytle Extender (VoxBox): If you  have oilier hair and are looking for something to help with second day hair get this! This will help keep you a bit cleaner and if you use this with a bit of dry shampoo at night. Or at least a cleaner looking ponytail.

Marula Light Hair Treatment & Styling Oil (Sephora Summer Hair Saviors): Oils are kind of my thing and this was a fantastic oil. It had a thin consistency that had a pleasant scent and it seemed to just melt into my hair. $46 for 3oz? That's a little steep and there are plenty of cheaper options I like.

Skincare:
Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix: These are fantastic. Yes they have glycolic acid, but I do only use them at night (if using during day def load on the sunscreen). They don't burn, have a scent, or leave behind redness. They're just a hardcore exfoliant that's as gentle as they come.

MD SolarSciences SPF 50 Sunscreen (May 2016 Birchbox): Sunscreens tend to break me out and make me greasy, but this worked really well. It got kind of watery at the end. Again this is super expensive, so I don't know if I would buy a full-size. I kinda just realized that this was for body. Oh well it still worked fine.

Clinique All About Eyes (Sephora 500 point perk): I switch my eye creams up a lot, and I had a decent size sample of this (I got about 3 months 1x a day) and it was pretty alright. Nothing special, but it seemed to work somewhat.

Biore Deep Pore Charchoal Cleanser: Charcoal works wonders for congested skin. I have seen a difference and I will continue to use charcoal based cleansers. If you want to try it and see how it works, I recommend this because it is rather cheap.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (GWP from Birchbox): Eh this lotion is fine. Although I have read if you do a peel Vinosource is perfect to layer on top before sunscreen. I never find it to be heavy, and it is quite moisturizing. It just isn't something I'd seek out again.

Olay Tone Perfecting Cream (Target Beauty Box): I think Olay moisturizers are the nicest things I've ever put on my face. The texture of this was amazing! I've never put anything on my skin so luxurious and its not even that expensive. I don't think I saw a lot of brightening, but my skin is becoming brighter in general, so this could have helped.

Miscellaneos/Fragrance(s):
Tocca Crema da Mano Luxe in Cleopatra (January 2015 Birchbox): Um this is expensive. Well expensive for a hand cream. It had a pleasant scent, but had a somewhat powdery feeling left behind. I wouldn't buy a full-size but it's great to use this up!

Penhaligon's Levantium Perfume (April 2016 Birchbox): I have a problem with expensive perfumes. I tend to fall in love with them. This one is no different. Though I have found cheaper places to buy it, but it really smelled so nice! I will admit that it doesn't tend to last long, so that would definitely keep me from buying a full-size at the moment.

Glossier balm dotcom: This is the best lip balm ever. I also use it when I have a dry patch. I've got backups and I will eternally use this stuff. It's very Vaseline like without the taste, or heavy feeling.

Bath & Body Works Nourishing Hand Cream Magnolias & Mimosas: I think this is my favorite hand lotion scent. Do they even make this anymore? I had a friend who used to work at B&BW, so I ended up with a lot of extras. This one was definitely a win.

Makeup:
Tarte Tartiest Lash Paint Mascara (Sephora Lash Sampler): I hated this mascara. I stabbed myself in the eyes too many times with the unforgiving natural bristles. The last time I used it I was like "yeah you're going in the trash." While it is a black mascara there are cheaper and less expensive options for me to potentially go blind over.

Clinique High Impact Mascara (Sephora 500 point perk)- I loved this mascara, and kept it wayyyy too long. It did such a great job of lengthening and separating and creating a very natural look on its own. If you layered it on top of another mascara, it did the same and just made your lashes go bam! I seriously need to buy a full-size.

Vasanti Kajal Extreme Eyeliner in Rose Gold (December 2014 Birchbox): This  isn't an exact empty, but I felt it was making my eyes a bit red so time to move on. I used this in my inner rim for brightening. It just gives a different look instead of nude or white. L'Oreal makes a rose gold liner, so I could probably save myself a few bucks in shipping and price and just buy this.

Elizabeth Arden Grand Entrance Mascara (Rachhloves topBox): I loved this mascara. It did have a dangerous brush, but it just did wonders for my lashes. Every time I used it I would get full fluffy curled lashes that looked very fake, but gorge at the same time. If you don't like Benefit They're Real I would try this. The wand is a little less dangerous.

So there you have it! I'm proud that I was able to use that much stuff. In fairness I get a lot of subscriptions and samples of products, so I'm constantly trying mini's. I think if I would have to hand out a disappointing product award it would be to the Tarteist Lash Paint. I just couldn't get over the brush and it never did anything super special for my lashes.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
