Another New Subscription Box Review: June 2016 Allure Beauty Box

Yes, yes I know another box. I'm sorry I can't help myself. I like mini things and I like to have a lot of them. I am a beauty hoarder. Until there is meetings for it I will not admit my addiction publicly, just on here. Back to the box, Allure is a newly branded beauty box (formally Sample Society) that has been around for quite sometime. Before they got a makeover mid-2015 Allure was known for being a more expensive option ($15 a month) and sending out really really tiny samples from the same collection of brands. As an avid stalker of MySubscriptionAddiciton.com I can tell you that they have gotten a lot better.

So when a round of spoilers came out in April for the May box I had to have it! Apparently I wasn't the only one with that idea because they oversold that box. I was then told (after I contacted customer service twice) that I was to be getting the June box instead. I'm not going to lie the initial spoilers for this month did not wow me and I was regretting my purchase. I regretted my purchase even more when the 10th of the month rolled around and I had no tracking information for this box. After contacting customer service again I was told that items were held up in customs at France. *sigh* Soon after I finally received tracking and now it is here! I have tested everything at least once and have now come to some thorough conclusions.

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk (FS $20):The dry shampoo from Klorane wasn't the original item supposed to be in my box. I was supposed to be getting Klorane Shampoo with Mango Butter. Not that I'm disappointed because I've also tried that shampoo (via Birchbox) and it smelled delicious. Happy to get what I get I guess. This dry shampoo has been a staple of subscription boxes for the past 2.5 years. I was introduced to it from Birchbox and I really do love it. It does an excellent job, but I like the other version with nettle better. That one is specifically made for oily hair and does the best job. Final Grade: A-

Pur-lisse Blue Lotus Eye Adore Serum ( FS $65):
I finished my other eye cream (Clinique All About Eyes) just in time to start trying this. It's only been a few days, so no dramatic differences yet. I agree that it feels light and it almost feels like you put nothing under your eyes at all. I'm liking this, but it is a bit expensive for me to justify a full-size, because I know their are less expensive options that already work for me. I think it's definitely nice to try though. Final Grade: B

Pur-lisse Blue Lotus SPF 30 Essential Daily Moisturizer (FS $55):
I've only used this once and I wasn't super impressed. I felt that it had a quite sticky feel on the skin and it instantly made me look greasy about 15 minutes after applying. I feel like makeup didn't sit very nicely on top of it either. I definitely need to play around with it more, but #notimpressed. Final Grade: TBD

Julep Nail Color in April (FS $14): I've tried Julep before and their polishes are okay. I was hoping for one of the other colors (either an iridescent orchid or a sky blue), but this one is nice. It's almost like a neon red. I think I'll be rocking it this weekend. Initial Grade: B

Update: This polish is awful! It dripped everywhere, applied extremely thick, but dried down patchy. It shrunk on my nails after about a day and half of wear, and I hadn't even been doing anything crazy with my hands! I knew there was a reason I didn't like Julep polishes and this reminded me how much I hate it. I'll try and work it again, but as of right now it is getting a new final grade of a F.

Leaders 7 Wonders Tomato SuperFood Coconut Gel Mask (FS $6):
I love sheet masks. I went to Koreatown in NYC a few months ago and bought almost $100 worth of sheet masks. They are such an amazing beauty product. I've tried a brand from Leaders previously (my first sheet mask ever!) and it wasn't my favorite. Judges are in and this mask was really nice. I've actually never used a gel mask and it was fantastic! Totally worth checking it out. I also saw some brightening from it, but it didn't do much for acne in one use. I'm very much into them and I need to get to Ulta and pick some more up! Final Grade: A-

Kardashian Beauty Cabana Bronze (FS $14.99):
People really got upset when this was included in the box. I've seen this around Ulta before and I actually looked up the reviews upon learning it would be in this box and it got really great reviews! I know that their hair care line gets fantastic reviews and I own a couple of their glossy jumbo balms, they're nice too. I may be in the minority, but my sample showed up intact (many turned up smash according to reddit) and it swatched rather beautifully. This is a matte bronzer, but I wouldn't call it a true matte, more like a satin matte. I think as long as a product does its intended job, it doesn't matter what the brand is or who more specifically is behind the brand. Not for nothing, but the Kardashians know their beauty, so I would expect their products to be truly great.

Alright enough of that, this product is actually really great. I didn't find it too dark and I enjoyed the satin finish. It's a very natural looking bronzer, so I think this would be great for the winter months. Don't be put off by the Kardashian branding, this is a great light-medium bronzer for fair-medium skin tones all year round. Final Grade: B+

This was a good first showing from Allure. After the fiasco of the May box I've been told that I am getting a special box for the waiting game. I'm happy with that and I hope it has something good in it. Spoilers are up for July and I am very excited about it. There is La Mer in the box! La Mer will actually be on my skin! I'm still determining whether or not I want to keep this or just keep Sephora Play after I cancel Birchbox.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
