UPDATED: ~Birchbox April 2013~

So I got my Birchbox about a week ago for this month and I thought I'd review it for everyone. Usually I just use things and then say I hate them, I never give them a fair chance. With this box, and this post however, I will be doing full reviews. As always I'm excited about the thought of getting my Birchbox every month, but they very rarely deliver. This month though, wasn't too bad since I actually got things I've wanted to try.

For those of you who don't know Birchbox is a monthly subscription service that delivers 5-6 deluxe size samples to your doorstep for $10 a month. It is a recurring charge, or you can chose to purchase gift subscriptions. They also have a points system, for every 100 points you earn you get $10 in the shop. The points can be earned by purchasing boxes, items in the shop, writing reviews on the item, and inviting friends.

The contents of my box were:

  • Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream
  • Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
  • Caudalie SOS Morning Eye Rescue
  • Yes to Carrots Lip Balm in Citrus
  • Yes to Grapefruits Scrub & Dark Spot Correcting Serum
  • Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes
* I did not get the Yes to Cucumber Towelettes and they've already heard about it. I've tried them before and currently own them, but don't promise something and then don't deliver.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream ($39.00)
Juice Beauty CC Cream in Natural Glow

  • I was really excited to try this because I am obsessed with BB & CC creams, in theory. Now that being said they haven't always worked out for me. The only one that has fulfilled my expectations was Tarte's BB Tinted 12 Hour Primer (which technically isn't even a BB cream). I kept an open mind and decided to try it out.  I was not overly impressed with the results. It felt and looked like I just put moisturizer on my skin, and did not stay matte. Not that I expected it to stay matte, but I expected more than a half hour of being shine free. It was supposed to have a "fruity scent", which absolutely was not at all fruity. It was a straight citrus/vinegar like scent that I wasn't a fan of. I could get over that however, just not the rest of the cons against this. I'll definitely use the rest of the sample up, but I will not be purchasing this. I'll just stick to my usual foundation routine.

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle ($21.95 8oz a Birchbox Exclusive)
  • This was the product that I was most excited to try, mostly because I'm a huge hair girl and love all things hair products. It smells fantastic, it has a coconut like scent (it really reminds me of summer). I was a little confused when I initially hit the pump and nothing came out, but then realized that you must shake it first to really liquefy it. I washed and conditioned my hair in my normal routine and also applied my Garnier Anti Humidity Smoothing Milk and then sprayed the protector on. My hair didn't immediately feel like it had too much product in it, but as I was drying it I could tell. I also read the ingredients on the website and found that there is alcohol in this product. Not too sure how I feel about that, I don't think my color treated hair needs to be dried out. Also its kind of ridiculous that you would put alcohol in a "heat protecting spray", since the whole purpose of it is protect your hair from getting dried out from heat damage. Loved it at first, but now I'm not too sure.
Caudalie SOS Morning Eye Rescue ($34.00)

  • Finally something I actually like! I thought at first that there was absolutely no product in the tube (said there was enough for 2 weeks of use), but then I realized I just had to set the tube upright instead of throwing it in my "face" drawer. Yeah HUGE blonde moment, anyways I've actually really enjoyed this stuff. I've seen an improvement in my under eye firmness (which is one of the promises) and I've also seen my dark circles become diminished. I don't have terribly dark circles to begin with (yet, thanks Mom!), but I have noticed that they've lightened. It has no fragrance and you only need a tiny bit to blend in, which is why this is actually a fantastic sample size. I just wish that it wasn't $33, but then again I get it. I mean you want your eye cream to deliver all of these fantastic results so you have to be willing to pay a bit more. Not too sure if I'll purchase it once I save up enough points, but I'll keep it in my basket just in case. Overall this was  real win for me.
Yes to Carrots Lip Balm in Citrus ($9.99 for a pack of 4)
  • I looooove lip balm, no seriously its a problem. I buy chapsticks and lip balm, well really just lip products in general, like I'm stocking up for the zombie apocolypse. So when I saw that it was going to be in there I was like, oh okay great I can always use a spare. I think it has a fantastic texture and you definitely don't need a lot to get the job done, but the smell is awful. I'm not a huge citrus fan, and I loathe lemon flavored/scented thinks (except tea, delicious!). The smell is just not for me. I don't mind grapefruit or lime scented things, but orange and lemons are a no go for me. I know they have other flavors and I would be willing to try those. Overall I like this product, just not too taken by the scent. so it's a semi-win.
Yes to Grapefruits Scrub & Dark Spot Correcting Serum ($9.99 Scrub & $19.99 Serum)
  • I used the scrub already and I'm still waiting to use the serum because I currently use another one. I do plan on getting to it soon, but the scrub was just okay. I've used the Yes to Tomatoes scrub before and loved it, the only downfall to that was the smell. The grapefruit one, which claimed to be a "brightening" scrub didn't have a disgusting scent. I didn't feel that the scent was overpowering and the beads were not that abrasive. I didn't feel like it "brightened" my skin, maybe after continued use it may. It wasn't bad for an exfoliator, but I still think I prefer the YtT one better, even with its disgusting scent.
L to R: Yes to Grapefruits Scrub & Serum, Beauty Protector, CC cream, Yes to  Carrots Lip Balm, Caudalie SOS Eye Rescue

The last thing I was supposed to receive were the Yes to Cucumbers face towelettes  which I did not. I have used them before and actually currently own them, so I can tell you that they are pretty good. They have a fresh scent and they're supposed to be "calming" which is why I use them at the end of the day for makeup removal. You also get 30 in pack, which is pretty good deal for $10.

Overall this box was pretty decent. I'm usually super excited to get them and then always end up becoming disappointed. I just wish I got more makeup sometimes. I seem to always get hair and face care products. It could be worse though, some people get loaded with fragrance samples. I think the only thing I would buy from this box would be the eye cream, and I could probably even find a cheaper alternative for that. That's it for now. The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
