My First Ever Wet & Wild Mini Haul!

Whenever I’m scoping out makeup on YouTube or on other blogs, people are always raving about Wet and Wild. I too have been intrigued by the brand, because I know that it has come a long way from the cheap makeup you used to get when you were in middle and high school. The formulas have changed, but the prices have generally stayed the same. So when Walgreens was having a bogo sale I thought how could I resist? I didn't pick up much, just some things I've heard good reviews about and the rest was just things that appealed to me.

I picked up two bronzers, one eight-shadow palette, one eye trio, one lipstick, and one lip gloss. In all I believe my total came to about $10 before tax, (I bought a couple other things), so not too sure on my final total. For Six items that isn't bad and I was super excited to try out my new purchases!

The first thing I picked up was the Coloricon Bronzer with SPF 15 in “Reserve Your Cabana”. This is the lightest bronzer that they sell, but I don’t intend to use this as a bronzer. Unless you’re incredibly pale and are in the middle of winter you won’t be able to use this as a bronzer. You can however, use this as a highlighter, which I’ve heard people say it’s a dupe for everything from Lorac’s Perfectly Lit Powder to Hourglass’ new Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light. I've used this as a highlighter already and I loved it! It’s a lot different than the highlighter I have been using, which is Benefit’s Girl Meets Pearl (my all-time favorite!). It’s a softer more natural like, skin finish. I’m very pleased with this, but I still feel like it shouldn't be packaged as a bronzer, but rather as a highlighter.

Unblended Swatches

It has a gorgeous texture to it as well, very soft and velvety, which is why I was surprised that the next shade up in the line didn't have the same texture.  The other bronzer I got was the medium shade which is called “Ticket to Brazil”. It does have shimmer, and has a sunscreen like scent, which does seem to wear off after a while. When you first swatch it, it looks rather orange toned, but when you really blend it out, that goes away and it turns into a nice finish. I tend to go lighter on bronzer anyways, but this one blended out was overall very good. It doesn't match up to my all-time favorite bronzer which is Too Faced’s Snow Bunny, but so far I am liking this.

Left to Right: Palette in "Petal Pusher" & Eye Trio in "I'm Getting Sunburned"
The two eye products that I bought were things I was kind of on the fence about. I bought an eight shadow palette in “Petal Pusher”, which I don’t believe is a limited edition and a new shadow trio in “I’m Getting Sunburned”.

The purples in the eight color palette are very smoky-eye friendly, but it can also be worn by themselves.  When I swatched them the first time I was not into all eight of the colors. About three of them didn't show up (yes they are highlight colors, but I still want to see them). Overall I wasn't too impressed with this palette. The shadows all had some sort of fallout and only the super dark ones were pigmented. I also didn't like any of the looks you were “suggested” or “supposed” to achieve. It just wasn't for me.

The trio on the other hand, really impressed me.  I wasn't super into the middle “crease” color which was a dark brown with some shimmer.  It was just a little too dark for me, and not all too bendable to be worn in the crease. The “eyelid” bronze color is actually my favorite and reminds me of a limited edition Smashbox color I had about six years ago, which has deemed impossible to dupe. (It’s also a dupe for Urban Decay’s “Half-Baked” in case you were wondering.) The shadows weren't super velvety or creamy and did have some fallout, but they did impress me.  I can’t speak for the rest of the palettes which I don’t recommend, but I would definitely recommend the trios.

Now for my favorite part of buying makeup in general, lip products. I love lip gloss, lip sticks, lip balms, I love everything under the sun with lips. And the reason I do is because, I’m not always patient enough to do a complicated eye or have even a big enough skill-set to do some eye looks, so I like a bold  lip.  Or not even a bold lip. I just like the idea of a bold lip, because most of the time I end up being just a lip balm girl. Anyways I purchased two lip colors, a Mega Last Liquid Lip Color and a Mega Last Lip Color. Let’s start with the liquid lip which I believe is packaged as a super pigmented lip-gloss. The color I bought is “Click on My Hyperpink” and it’s a really pretty matte bright pink. I love a pink lip, probably one of my downfalls is having too many pink lip-glosses. It also reminded me of a Tarte lip gloss I own, color wise.

I got home and tried it out and it was not what I expected. It dried almost the instant it hit my lips. Not only did it patch up, it turned into some kind of super glue. When I rubbed my lips together they didn't come apart. They stuck! I don’t think I've ever had that in a lip product.  The color was also hookerish and I don’t mean it in a sassy nighttime way, I mean it as a straight up working the corner Pretty Woman style.  So I was very disappointed that it didn't work out for me. I’m sure the other colors in the collection aren't like that, but I don’t even like the formula enough to want to try others.

The Mega Last Lip Color however, was a BIG winner for me. I thought that the consistency of the formula was amazing; it lasted about three hours untouched without any fading.  It also, kept its moisture which I was really impressed with. Sometimes when you use a lipstick (depending on the formula) they won’t stay soft feeling in the long run. And I felt that this didn't have a problem with that. The color I got is called “Cherry Bomb”, and it’s this really nice burgundy color. Not a traditional “cherry red”, it reminds me more of the color of an actual fresh cherry. I've heard that the Mega Shield with SPF 15 perform in the same way and I’m excited to try those out as well. My only con with this is that it does leave behind some product on your glass or napkin, which doesn't bother me so much since the color still looks great on your lips.

"Cherry Bomb" & "Click on My Hyperlink"

I’m very impressed with my first ever Wet & Wild haul. I hope that I can get back to Walgreens before the sale is over and I can pick some more of the Mega Last lipsticks, another of the bronzers, and some more eye trios. I hope I can try out even more looks with the palette maybe give it a second glance. I know that I will be getting use out of the lipstick because it’s a fantastic color. As for the liquid lip, I may just toss it, if not it’ll just be collecting dust in my case. That’s it for now; I hope you enjoyed this post. A little bit different then my usual book reviews, but still good I hope.

P.S. In case you were wondering what the liquid lip swatch looked like on the website and why I was drawn to it I've included it. It did not look like stripper pink.

That is not the same color I swatched.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
