Beauty, Set, Go ~Sephora Play! January 2017!~

Welcome to 2017! Hopefully everything goes well and I'll be able to keep my promise of growing this blog and being better prepared. I really want to commit to this and I'm willing to do it! Hopefully this post is off to a good start.

And now onto the show...

tarte FRXXXTION Stick (Full-size $22): I love this! I was really interested in trying this, but I was also extremely skeptical about a stick cleanser. I've heard YouTubers rave about this, but again I didn't want to pay over 20 bucks for a cleanser. I was wrong I will totally be paying $22 for a cleanser! I read one review that said this was messy, and I'm not sure how they were using it because it isn't messy at all. You wet your face, rub the stick onto face, then use fingers to scrub in cleanser, rinse. Fairly simple and it has a fantastic result. I think this will replace my current exfoliator that I use twice a week (because it has microbeads and I don't wanna hurt the fishies), once I run out of this sample. Final Grade: A-

Ouai Treatment Masque (Full-size $13 for 3 treatments or $32 for 8 treatments): Umm I'm confused by this product. You put it in your hair before you shower, let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse out. After I rinse it out am I then supposed to shampoo my hair? I can't just not shampoo my hair because it's terribly greasy and I have a feeling this won't end well. I'm not sure. I would never buy a full-size of this because I'm sure it isn't worth the money, and the directions are confusing. I doubt this will live up to the Christophe Robin masque we got a few months ago. Final Grade: TBD

Drunk Elephant LaLa Retro Whipped cream (Full-size $60): I'm trying to get better about using my samples monthly, so I already cracked this open. Also, its from Drunk Elephant and I had to open it. It's a nice moisturizer, but I feel that a bit of the innovation is lost in the packaging of the sample. The actual product has a press down top that the cream gets deposited out of, I feel like that gives it a bit more of a whipped texture. This does not have a whipped texture, it's rather solid and it isn't really easy to scoop out of the jar. I feel like i would really enjoy the standard packaging much more. It is moisturizing, smells like my Nana's cold cream, and seems to soak in nicely. I would say it's a win. Final Grade: B

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey (Full-size $17): A few months ago I got a sample of Pink Honey, which is one of their newer shades. I wasn't super impressed with it. The color payoff was lacking and it didn't really show up on my lips. I didn't have high hopes for this, but I have to say I really love it! The color is a pretty blackberry stain that I do believe will look good on everyone like they say. I find it to be moisturizing and the color doesn't slide around at all on my lips. I can see myself buying a full-size in the very near future. Final Grade: A-

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 50+ in Medium (Full-size $38): This is something I've sampled before and I haven't been super impressed with it. Medium is just a bit too dark for my skin tone and I don't particularly like the finish. I would say that if you have oily skin, this probably won't work out for you, but combo, normal, and dry will all really like this. It's just a little too moisturizing for me and ends up being greasy. Final Grade: C

Fragrance of the Month: Tory Burch Love Relentlessly (Full-size $28-$115): I sprayed this and I loved it! And then about 10 minutes later I got a massive headache. It has a very strong powdery old lady scent underneath and that isn't for me. I'll test it again (on a day I don't have work) and see if I get the same effect, but at the moment it won't be getting used. Final Grade: D

And there we have it, my first subscription box of the year and it was pretty good. I have high hopes for the rest of the year Sephora. Please do not ruin this for me. I'm already thinking about adding 2 more boxes to my ever growing addiction, I'm just not sure yet. I do know that I want one of them to be the Look Fantastic box. Have you seen that thing? It looks simply amazing. So many good things to come this year. Including back to back articles of my best of 2016!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
