The Cool Cut ~October 2016 Sephora Play!~

I'm not gonna lie I'm super behind on posts. With that being said I'm not gonna lolly gag around with an opener. Is that how you spell lolly gag or is it lally? Who knows. All I can say is that October 2016 for Sephora Play was a hit. I think they may even survive cancellation.

Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Driver's Seat (Full-size $24): I had actually just returned this product in a separate color because I wasn't happy with the formula. I either got a bad batch or I was using it wrong because this applies fantastically. I thought the color was going to pull fairly orange on me because it's such a warm pinky nude, but it looks really great on. As far as comfort goes liquid lipsticks are not the most comfortable things for me to wear, but I can work with this one because if how light it feels. Final Grade: A-

Erborian Bamboo Creme Frappe Skin Reviving Fresh Gel (Full-size $43): This should've been in a summer box, it was so light and refreshing. I loved the smell and I think this could double as a primer if you have combo or slightly oily skin. The very oily should still apply their mattifying primer. The sample is all gone and I will remember this for a future purchase. Final Grade: A+
P.S. Things don't get an A+ a lot around here, so this is a really big endorsement for me.

My cat Sadie (AKA Munchkin, shortened to Munch) wanted to help with pics this month
Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil (Full-size $71): I'm currently obsessed with a Christophe Robin hair scrub I got over the summer and I was so happy to try more. It does smell a little old ladyish, so the smell could be off putting to some, but I don't mind. I think it's an interesting mask because you actually lather it up at the roots and then leave it on for 2 minutes. I thought it might be too heavy for my fine oily hair, but it works like a charm. I so want a full-size. Christophe Robin you are a man after my own hair obsessed heart. Another thing to add is if you hate lingering scents skip, because you'll be smelling this all day. That doesn't bother me, and ladies with thick hair may find this a little hard to work with.  Final Grade: A

The Estee Edit by Estee Lauder Flash Photo Gloss (Full-size $20): Really excited to try something from the Estee Edit line because my first foray into the line got returned. This didn't fair any better. I feel like the applicator doesn't pick up enough product, it certainly doesn't whiten my teeth, and the feel on the lips isn't that great. I'll use it up, but really it's not worth the price or anyone's time. Final Grade: C-

Farmacy Skin Dew Mist (Full-size $44): Me and the word "dewy" don't really mix, but I really liked this! The sample is already gone, and it wasn't all that dewy. I would buy a full-size, but the sprayer was kinda wonky. I wouldn't use this to set you're makeup like the bottle says, but it is really good to spritz on before you apply any acne products. Final Grade: B+

Fragrance of the Month: Yves Saint Laurent Mon Paris (Full-size $29-122): My gosh Sephora, you just get me when it comes to fragrances. This. Smelled. So. Good. I'm almost through with the vile and I already have my eyes on a set at Ulta that has the small 1 oz bottle and a purse spray included. I feel like I should be traipsing around Paris having a grand old time with my chic friends while wearing this. Highly recommend if you like fruity, sweet floral fragrances. Final Grade A+

I'm not gonna lie Sephora Play, you knocked it out of the park. There were quite a few variations if the box this month and I'm happy with the one I received. Unfortunately none of these made it into my Sephora VIB sale haul, but maybe next year. Actually I would probably never buy anything from this box because I'm cheap, but hey a girl can dream.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
