Speed Dating ~September 2016 Allure Beauty Box~

After last month's box I had higher hopes for September's Allure. Unfortunately when spoilers came out I was #notimpressed. There is so much repetition in subscription boxes and I would like to see that change. That might be my fault though since I subscribe to 2 currently and some have repeat products. I appreciate getting new brands and Allure doesn't really send out new brands. Let's just say if I get another Pur-lisse item in my box next month I won't be surprised. Would it kill you to send something else out Allure??

Pur-lisse Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Cleansing Milk (Full-size $38): Please Allure, no more of this! This is my fourth Blue Lotus line item in the 4 months I've been subscribed to this box. While I'm happy to be able to get to try something that is on the more expensive side/something I don't have immediate access too, but I'm over it. I've used cleansing milks/balms in the past, so I know the drill. These are good to remove makeup or double cleanse. Put it on dry skin, eye area last and then rinse or wipe it off with a cloth. You can also use this as a regular cleanser, but I prefer it as a makeup remover. I felt this did a great job. It worked just as well as Liz Earle or Clinique's Take the Day Off, which are two of my favs. Although I don't feel like it did a great job taking off my eye makeup, because I had to go in with my micellar water after to get about half of what was left. I also had to use a lot of the product to get any slip on my skin, which bothered me because if I'm paying that much money for $38 I want it to last. Final Grade: B-

Supergoop Shine On Lip Screen SPF 50 (Full-size $22): I'm always hesitant to try new lip balms, especially ones that have SPF because I have incredibly sensitive lips. While I was hesitant to try because of that reason, but I was also upset about the size. It's so tiny and usually tiny samples are pointless because you can't gauge how well the sample actually works. I've only used it a couple of times, but I can tell you that the sample is very full and you don't need a lot to get the job done. I haven't noticed any irritation on my lips and I like that it has SPF in it which will be good for my commute because I walk to work and will have some extra protection under my lipstick. It does have some sort of tingle, so I'm not sure if that's menthol or mint or if its irritating me. Only time will tell. Final Grade: B-

Eau Thermale Avene PhysioLift Eyes (Full-size $44): Too loaded up on eye creams, no time to review. Final Grade: TBD

GrandePrimer (Full-size $24.95): I've used mascara primer before, the Mary Kay one is actually my favorite, but this did not do the job. It was heavy and clumpy. I could not figure out a way to get this to work. Every time I used it made my lashes worse. I'm still testing, but it's not looking so good. Final Grade: D+
Orly Breathable Treatment+Color Nail Polish in Nail Superfood ($8.99): I love getting polishes in boxes because I paint my nails weekly. How this one works is you don't use a base or top coat and only one swipe will do. I found that while the color was good with one swipe (meaning what you see in the bottle goes on your nails) two coats get you better results, sans brush strokes. Although I probably could've used 3 coats. Since I had stuff to do the day I painted I used quick dry drops and it lasted without chips for almost a week, but it did somehow shrink on my nails. If that makes any sense. I like it, I wish I had gotten a more everyday color though. Final Grade: B+

Bvlgari Omnia Coral (Full-size $25-82): I've never gotten a mini fancy perfume bottle before! This is so cute! Too bad it's a bitch to open and I didn't realize the directions on the inside flap of the box until I sat here for 5 minutes trying to break into it. Once finally opened, I thought it smelled pretty good. It doesn't have tremendous staying power though. That would keep me from buying a full-size. Still smells yummy enough for me to spend time with it. Final Grade: B+

This was an okay month for me. I liked the perfume, minus how you open it (seriously it was that hard) and while I'm over that Blue Lotus line the cleansing milk is nice. Nothing is just exciting for me anymore, and like I said before maybe that's my fault. Perhaps I need to stop subscriptions all together or branch out to a new market. High hopes as always for October, but I won't be holding my breath. That's all for now!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
