On the Hunt ~Allure Beauty Box July 2016~

Another Allure box! I actually really liked my first month with then. They are $15 a month instead of $10 (like Birchbox & Sephora Play), which I don't honesty mind because I'm getting to try different brands than I have before. When the spoilers came out I was thrilled at what I would be getting. La Mer?! Uh yes please! I think this box got the most love out of the 3 last month. One product is currently in my nightly beauty routine and everything will get used up by the end of the year. Probably...who knows I've got a lot of stuff okay? No judging.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Super Strawberry (FS $17): Another product I've tried before, there's a theme here. The color I originally had was Curviest Caramel and its a very nice brown pink, extremely wearable. While this is a nice color in the tube, it has to be very heavily applied to get any color payoff. For me it's too sheer. My $8 moisture sticks from Neutrogena work much better and have better pigmentation than this particular color. Could just be that I have super pigmented lips too, so it looks like nothing on me; but I do like the formula. Clinique has that going for them.  Final Grade: C

La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream (FS $170-465): Okay so this is ridiculously expensive.  A few weeks ago Kim K snapped or Instagramed how much she loves this stuff and uses it every morning. Yeah I'm not sure that would ever happen for me, but I was so excited I could try this! I've used it once because it's extremely heavy. This isn't something I would use this time of year because of the extreme heat we've been having and my lack of air conditioning, but I think I'll get a few uses out of it this winter. Final Grade: TBD

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer: (FS $36): I got this sample twice this month. I was not a happy camper. While i always like this when I use it, it doesn't keep my oil at bay for more than 2 hours and that has to be in dry, low temperature weather. So I don't like getting samples of this. It's also extremely overplayed in subscription boxes. Seriously subscription box Gods stop sending it. We've all tried it by now. Final Grade: Please Stop Sending!

GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment (FS $69): I've used this before, so I know how it works. I've personally never seen the dramatic results that others do, but I get the hype. I did use it as a spot treatment and I actually likes it that way. Also this sample didn't seem particularly full, which was disappointing because this stuff is expensive. Final grade: B

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II (FS $62-92): I've been using Thai for the past week and I really like it. The only think I dislike about it is the citrus smell. To me it smells like Delym cough syrup, but I can get over that. I'm not sure how long till you get results, but I'm excited about younger looking skin. I need help with crows feet big time. Final grade: TBD

It was a good box, but not the greatest subscription box I've ever gotten. I'm just really excited I got to try La Mer. That was my main motivation for stalking the mail lady the day it was set to arrive. Spoilers for next month are okay. We got another Pur-lisse Blue Lotus moisturizer, just without SPF, which is from the same line we just got in June. Not excited for that, but we'll see. That's all for now!

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
