Birchbox Thinks You're Beautiful! ~ September 2015

I fell like historically September is never a standout month for BB. You would think it would be pretty bangin' because September is an important month for the fashion and beauty world with all the new releases. As always I peaked early on the site (BTW your box is usually available to see around the 9th of each month), and I wasn't overly thrilled with the contents.

Acure Organics Facial Cleaning Gel Superfruit+CGF/Full-size $26
This cleanser infuses skin with anti-aging ingredients for a fresh, younger-looking complexion.
This will be the second cleanser I've tried from Acure. I don't mind their products, its good to know you can buy their line at Target now. I think they're a great affordable line for people who want a natural skincare system.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil/ Full-size $25
An easy-to-use tool that helps fill in and naturally shape unruly brows.
I actually thought this was Anastasia Brow Wizz which everyone seems to love, so I jumped to get it as my sample choice. Well I had a massive blonde moment because it's not the same. I swatched this and it seems olive toned and also incredibly hard to swatch. I can only imagine on my brows.

Davines This Is a Sea Salt Spray/ Full-size $25
This styling spray gives you beachy texture and megavolume without any stickiness.
Holy crap look at the size of this thing! I love Davines and I'm sure this is excellent. I'm just kind of drowning in sea salt/texture sprays at the moment. I'm still working on the (tiny) Harvey Prince Sample I got in May!

Japonesque Velvet Touch Shadow/ Full-size $33
A velvety shadow that balances a richly pigmented hue with a subtle hint of shimmer.
I'm actually surprised at how tiny this full size product is. And the colors are just okay. I like the satin brown, but I could do without the greenish gold.

L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse Aux Papillons Eau de Toilette/ Full-size $85
The fresh notes of orange blossom, jasmine, lime and tuberose evoke a feeling of simple summer days.
One word: Gross! I already tossed this sample. It smelled like lilacs, which brings back allergy and asthma memories from the tree outside my childhood window. I hate that smell. It makes me really queasy.

I was excited for the Davines Sea Salt Spray, because I love Davines. The Japonesque eye duo, which I was excited about, but the colors are just eh. I'll probably end up liking the Acure face wash, but I'm still working through a trial of First Aid Beauty Cleanser, so it may be awhile til I get to it. It's nice to have all of this stuff to stock up on though for the future. Not the best month, but then again I've had a lot worse from BB. No word on sample choice for October yet, hopefully it's something spectacular!

P.S. I've just compared the prices, which seemed odd to me on the card, to those on birchbox.com and other cosmetic websites and they are off by a few dollars. Which is good to know because the shadow and face wash are definitely not worth that much.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
