June 2015 Birchbox "Say Yes!"

Birchbox is a monthly subscription service that sends 5 deluxe sample sized beauty products from mid-range to high-end cosmetic, nail polish, and skin care brands for $10 a month. Every once in awhile they will include a full size product, or if you subscribe to their new upgraded subscription plan, (an extra $20 a month) you'll receive 2 full size beauty products in addition to your samples. This is something new that BB is still trying out, but so far I've heard good things about it. Something that's almost a year old now is Sample Choice, where BB features 3-4 different samples and allows you to pick one that will be in your monthly box. The theme changes every month and you don't always have to choose your sample, there is an option to not choose a sample or choose the monthly featured box. The featured box sometimes has a guest editor, this past month it was The Tig by Meghan Markle (Rachel on Suits!) and its usually the editor(s) favorite products of the moment. For my sample choice this month I went with Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Water mostly because it was the biggest sample and I didn't want any more sunscreen, but more on that later. This month we were also supposed to all get a full size Eyeko Fat Liquid Liner, but those apparently got held up at customs and we all got hair ties and pencil liners from Marcelle.

Caudalie  Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Fluid SPF 15- Full Size $64
I've tried items from both Caudalie and the Vinoperfect line before and I really like the brand. My only issue is Birchbox sends out incredibly small samples.  That is more likely Caudalie 's doing then BB, but still it makes it hard to form an opinions on. I'm all for getting skin perfectors or primers to try out because I have oily skin and primers are a must for me! I tried this yesterday and as a primer and for me I found it hard to blend. The feeling it left on my face was fairly tacky and I noticed no tint left on my skin (it didn't promise a tint, but I thought the color would). The Perfecting Fluid had a sunscreen scent which doesn't bother me, but I know it does some people. Final Grade: Would Not Purchase

Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Water Full Size- $32
I've tried the Simple Skincare brand of Micellar water and I was very impressed by my sample. Which made my sample choice this month very easy. I'm very familiar with Dr. Jart. I'm very familiar with Dr. Jart and their Korean brand of skincare, which has become very popular. (I'm a big fan of their ceramidin cream) This sample was a good size, perfect for travel or the gym. There's no scent to this water which is great fro people with sensitivities, and it also promises to tone and

remove makeup. The feel of this on my skin wasn't quite what the Simple Micellar gave me, but that could've been my fault. The directions said to use a cotton pad which I did not have (just cotton balls) and I thought the mouth of the bottle did not give out much product. So really I don't feel like I used enough product to get a feel for it. I'm glad there's more than enough uses in the sample for me to give a it a few more tried. Final Grade: Would Purchase

Klorane Shampoo with Mango Butter + Conditioning Balm- Full size $19.50
I use Klorane dry shampoo with nettle (green cap) and it's probably the best dry shampoo for oily hair, so I was excited to try their shampoo. I've had my eye on their shampoo with nettle, but this mango butter shampoo & conditioning balm will have to do for now. I've tried the shampoo already and my first reaction upon opening the cap was OMG this smells delicious! I have to wash my hair twice, so I used my usual shampoo and then used this second. I felt that it lathered well and really did a good job of cleaning my hair, the texture when I first poured ti out of the bottle was rather slimy, but I can get over that. Let's hope the conditioner is as good. I don't really have dry hair like this is intended for, but I still enjoyed it all the same. Final Grade: Would buy

Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner- Full size $11 (Full Size!)
I'm so over getting eyeliner from BB. This was the replacement product that we all got instead of the Eyeko liner and it was definitely a disappointment. The shade I received was Mulberry and I was very thankful it wasn't blue because I'm currently swimming in blue liner. Maybe its because I have soooooo many colored eyeliners just from BB alone that I don't care to add to the collection, but I wasn't wowed by this liner. It wasn't too deep in color, was not waterproof and when smudged

virtually disappears. The way I like to wear colored liners is to just blend or smudge them upward and on the lower lash line and then add a ton of lashes instead of wearing them with shadows. I didn't think the wear was that good, so it'll just be shoved in the back of my liner drawer and used when needed. Final Grade: Would Not Buy

Tocca Eau de Parfum, Isabel- Full size $68
I love Tocca! A few months ago (January, maybe) we were offered a Tocca hand cream in Cleopatra and I loved it! It smells like a green jolly rancher and the formula is so buttery, so it made me very excited to see a Tocca fragrance in my box! Isabel is their newest scent and smells heavily of roses with orange notes popping through. Its an interesting scent that I find to be really girly and sophisticated. I'll keep using the sample, but I don't think I'll be purchasing just because I didn't find the staying power to be very good and the only note I really picked up was rose which isn't my favorite perfume scent. I'll save it for the days I want to feel extra lady like. Final Grade: Would Not Buy

BB felt bad for promising those full size Eyeko liners that we didn't get, so they threw us something extra, a hair tie. Some people got twine type hair ties (or at least that's what they looked like) that are like $18 bucks a piece and others got the standard ribbon ties that were all the rage a couple of years ago. I received the Emi Jay ribbon in a lilac color and I will 100% be using this. I like to use them for bedtime because they don't leave any bend in my hair, but at $15 for 3 I would never purchase these on my own.

This box wasn't bad for my birthday month. I know BB doesn't know that its my birthday month, but I like to think that things are just better in the month of June. Not too much to complain about other than I really wanted that Eyeko liner, but they said we can expect it in a future box. Sample choice is already up for next month, we are able to choose 1 of 3 Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks. I'm thinking about going with the coral in Venezia. That's all for now!

P.S. I hate getting perfume samples in viles like this. I much prefer the fragrance samples with the pump style head.

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
