Dr. Scholl's Actives for Her (Brought to you by Influenster)

Time for another Influenster review! This time its a one product review box, I've only done these for Influenster. I know some people get the themed Voxboxes with all the fun goodies, but I tend to only qualify for the one brand review ones. Its all good though, I still enjoy them and love trying free stuff! Even if I do end up giving it all away like I did my Mary Kay stuff (sans the Lash Primer).

For this box I qualified to receive a free pair of Dr. Scholl's Active Series Inserts for Her. They retail for $19.99 at Target and $24.99 at Walgreens.  A little pricey for just one pair of insoles, but then again if you work out a lot or are just a sneaker fan in general, you may want to invest in a pair of quality insoles; not only for comfort, but also to extend the life of your sneaks (trainers, for those across the pond). The 'Her' insoles will be for shoe sizes 5.5-8 & 8.5-11, and the 'Him' insoles will fit 7.5-10 & 10.5-13. They are easy to be shaped for your needs, with lines easily seen for cutting.

The insoles have "TripleZone Protection" which goes into protecting the ball of your foot, arch, and heel. They are also supposed to combat pain from shin splints, runners knee, and plantar fasciitis. I don't suffer from any of those ailments, although I do have nerve damage in one foot, from my years of dance. Other than that, I could always use a little extra comfort in my workout. I decided to test these over a weeks worth of workouts, just to get a real feel for them. Since I wear a size 8 in sneakers, I had no problem slipping them into my Nike's and heading to the gym this morning.

Day One: Strength Training, First Test

I went to the gym this morning and tried them out. I did no cardio today, just abs and arms. I have to say that I felt a difference in my balance for sure with the added arch support. I tend to buy cheerleader/dance type sneakers anyways for max high arch comfort. The only problem I really had was that they made my shoes extremely tight. I had thicker socks on, so that might of added to the discomfort. I wasn't too happy with them today, because of the tightness. I'm hoping that they'll fit better next time.

Day Two: Zumba

Shoes were still a bit tight. They got me through a total 60 minute class. I don't usually have a lot of foot pain when I leave, but these definitely improved my balance and gave me some extra bounce in class.

Day Three: Yoga
Did flat abs yoga today, so no need for me trainers.

Day Four: Cardio
I'm nursing some tightness and pain in my lower back and hips, so I decided to take a break today and do some cardio. As I've said before I have some nerve damage in my foot, from a previous injury and my big and little toe on my right foot tend to go numb when I do cardio. I had the insoles in today and I didn't have any numbness. Didn't feel the tightness as much as the first two times I used them, so I'm either getting used to it or my shoes have stretched out.

Day Five: Rest
No workout for me today, woo woo! Tomorrow I'll be taking a class, so there will be an update on that tomorrow.

Day Six: Zumba
Tightness with these insoles in my shoes has totally gone, and I had so much fun having the extra bounce during class. I noticed a difference in my balance too with the added arch support. Really happy about how this trial is going.

Day Seven: Cardio/Strength Training
Had a little bit of tingling in my toe, but not as much as I used to have pre-insoles. Strength training was a lot more comfortable because there's no more snug fit in my sneaks. Overall my workout was much more enjoyable than the first day I tried these out.

And done!

I'm so happy I was chosen by Influenster to participate in this study, totally worth the "freeness" of it (all $20 of it). I highly recommend these to anyone who experiences shin splints, runners knee, and plantar fasciitis. These are definitely worth it and can help reduce your pain, so your not popping Tylenol and smelling like Bengay the rest of the day. Remember these aren't just for women, they make them for men too. :)

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee or Another Disappointing Read

A Book that Came Out this Year: The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Ugh what a downer. Usually I'll stop reading something if it doesn't grab me within the first 50 pages, and I didn't have to do that here because within the first 50 I was in. It was the middle 200 that really wasn't that great. The best way to describe The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is to take Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner minus the breastfeeding and Mommy woes and add in an exotic local and kidnapping. Not that I don't love myself some Jenn Weiner, but I thought this was going to be 100% different. Damn you GMA, you pulled me in with a review and it was not like you said! Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother o...

The Pulitzer Prize Dilemma...

I've been having a hard time deciding on what to read in order to check off Pulitzer prize winner on my reading list. Originally I wanted to read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.  After some further research, I read a lot of reviews that weren't very kind about Ms. Tartt's work. And they weren't professional reviews either, they were just ordinary reviewers on Goodreads, because the professional reviews that seemed to only fawn over this book. I'm conflicted. I fell like I should at least give The Goldfinch a try, but it's a really big book. I have some backups A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr . I've just finished the 4th book in The Selection Series, so now I can focus on this daunting task ahead of me. Any suggestions if this doesn't work out? I'm open to non-fiction winners as well! UPDATE: Okay so The Goldfinch definitely did not work out. I think I'm going to go with A ll the Lig...

Terrible True Stories

Two books I read in January were both non-fiction accounts that were informative, sad, and grotesquely interesting. The first being Gracia Burnham's In the Presence of My Enemies , a terrifying recount of Burnham & her husbands time being held captive by an Islamic military sect, Abu Sayyaf, based in the Philippines. The second non-fiction novel was Jerry Oppenheimer's Crazy Rich: Power, Scandal, and Tragedy Inside the Johnson & Johnson Dynasty . I don't think it needs a one sentence summary because really we can all draw our own conclusions from that title. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads Quick Facts: Based on the true story of two American missionaries taken hostage in the Philippines. The Burnham's (Gracia & Martin) spent over a year in captivity. Rescue attempts along with the actual rescue were very botched resulting in the wounding of Gracia & the deaths of Martin, as well as one other remaining hostage.  Okay so that's not a lot of qu...
