Getting the Mary Kay Look!

Yay free makeup to try! Woo woo! So excited for this post. I love trying new things and I especially love trying new makeup (I'm kind of a makeup hoarder), and even more excited to be trying a brand that I never have before. As I've said before Influenster is a program where you can take surveys, write reviews on products, and participate in giveaways in order to earn badges. Once you reach a certain level you qualify for Voxboxes. They are absolutely free boxes that you receive from Influenster and various companies, in turn you review the box and its contents.

Now that being said my box was entitled 'The Glamour Look by Mary Kay' and I it was filled with some of Mary Kay's top selling products. In my box:

  • eye shadow
  • mascara
  • lash primer
  • brush
  • lipstick
Five solid products that I'm sure will have no problem fitting into my already overcrowded train case and varied makeup routine.

Product Run Down & First Impressions:

  • Lash Love Lengthening Mascara in I <3 Black ($15.99) - "Long, strong, seriously separated lashes. What's not to love?"
  • True Dimensions Lipstick in Pink Cherie ($18.00) - "Intensely moisturizing. Exquisitely smoothing. It's like a color infused fountain of youth for your lips"
  • Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush ($10.00) - "This is the perfect brush for applying any cream product, such as Mary Kay Eye Primer, Mary Kay Cream Eye Color, and Mary Kay Concealer."
  • Lash Primer ($15.00) - "Add dramatic definition to your eyes to create fuller lashes when used as a base-coat under mascara. Or wear the clear formula alone for natural looking lashes."
  • Cream Eye Color in Violet Storm ($14.00) - " The soft, creamy, long wearing formula glides on easily, lasts for 10 hours and can be applied in multiple layers to deliver more noticeable color while retaining a lightweight feel."

I did a full face using these products and wore it for a regular 10 hour day.  As I've said before I love trying new things and since I've never tried Mary Kay before (I've only ever used Mark Cosmetics which I highly recommend). I did a rather simple look where I just washed the cream color over my eyes (purples look even better on green/hazel eyes) and used the lash primer on only one eye to see the difference. On its own the lipstick lasted about 2.5 hours, and that is without eating or drinking anything. My ranking and thoughts of the products are:

  1. Lash Primer: My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE in the whole entire box! I felt it did a fantastic job of lengthening and really grabbing the mascara and helping them look fuller. What I did was I applied a coat and let it dry completely. There was no hard or sticky feeling once it did, and then I applied my mascara.
  2. Lengthening Mascara: I've always been partial to lengthening mascara, mostly because my lashes tend to turn upwards on their own and tend to be very full, so making them longer is really the key. The bristles were rubber and they were packed closely together, but not too close together. The shape of the brush looked like Covergirl's Lashblast Clump Crusher, so that was a huge plus for me. This was not waterproof which made it very easy to remove, but I did wake up a tad smudgey in the morning. No problems with smudging during wear though.
  3. True Dimensions Lipstick: I love a good pink lip so this Pink Cherie was right up my alley. If you're into lip butters at all then the formula of this will also be for you. Its long lasting, moisturizing, and I get that its designed to make your lips look "younger &/fuller". Everything about this is good, except its one downfall the smell. This lipstick has a horrible, grandma's perfume, gives me a headache, and makes me nauseous smell. I'm hoping in time that it will wear off, but for now my use of this will be limited.
  4. Cream Shadow: It's a pretty color, pretty sheer, not that buildable. It also doesn't feel like it ever dries and is not smudgeproof. Unfortunately I'm going to have to give this a thumbs down. it creased very easily and did not hold up for the whole day.
  5. Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush: I own a lot of makeup brushes, so I feel I can judge this pretty well. With that being said this brush is terrible. It is not worth the $10, its overly synthetic, doesn't move well, and its hard to get product on the brush. There are better brushes that you can buy for the same price and a little bit more and get dramatically different/better results.

Out of the whole box I'd have to say my favorite product is the Lash Primer, and my least favorite the brush. I'd say it was the lipstick, but I can only really complain about the scent. I really did enjoy this box, a lot better than getting dish soap (sorry Palmolive). The primer will definitely be getting regular play in my routine as well as a repurchase. As far as everything else well its either going to get shoved into the back of my train case or swapped with a friend/family member.

Until we meet again Voxbox, and I hope we do soon! There are a ton of things to check out on Mary Kay (some of it a bit pricey), but sometimes its worth it. Check out your local Independent Beauty Consultant (top right hand on the Mary Kay homepage) if you have any questions about products. I Live a Glam Life...Kinda ~ November 2015 Birchbox!

This month I decied to do something a bit different and get the Guest Editor or Curated box. It helped a lot that the box was curated by one of my favorite YouTubers Tati Westbrook! She along with Emily Eddington ( Emilynoel83 ) and Melissa Autry ( Melmphs ) are gurus I consistently watch. And by consistently watch I mean every week! I trust Tati, so I knew I would love everything in her box! Avene Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum/ Full-size $36 This gentle, hypoallergenic hyrating serum plumps skin while promoting cellular regeneration. I was so excited to try this! Allure actually recommends this brand to girls like me with oily/blemish prone skin, so I couldn't wait to try! I agree taht its hydrating, so hydrating that I actually disn't feel the need to moisturize. Not a strong scent if any and just really great all around. I kinda litke it better than Shiseido Ultimune, which I just finished up. Final Grade: B+ Living Proof Perfect hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo/ Ful...

Effortless Summer ~July 2016 Sephora Play~

We didn't get spoilers for this month's box until right before it shipped out. I'm not 100℅ sure of that reason, other than to torture us. The only clue we did have is possible spoilers and word that they were splitting up the boxes according to skin type (combo/oily, normal/dry). Knowing that I filled out my profile for oily skin and that even on my beauty insider profile (Sephora's rewards program) I'm listed as oily I didnt worry about which box I'd get. Until I checked my Play subscription and I got the normal/dry box. So yeah, here it goes... First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser (Full-size $20): This is something I've used before and currently own a full size of. This is a nice face wash. I like it during the winter to use after a workout. It removes my surface oils and dirt, but doesn't strip your skin. It's a bit like soap, so if you're not into facial soaps I would skip. I passed this sample along because I honestly didn't need it. ...

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch by Julia Pandl

Woo Woo 2014, a month late but hey I'm a busy girl. So I've tackled the first book of the new year and it was Julia Pandl's Memoir of the Sunday Brunch.   Pandl a stand-up comic originally from the Milwaukee area tells, personal family tales of her sweet, but often failed childhood memories. From being the youngest of nine to free child-slave labor at her father's restaurant. Told in two parts, the first of funny brunch serving, sibling squabbles, and a lot of twitching; The second of more recent memories of caring for someone who once cared for you. Photo Courtesy of Goodreads.com "I thought my dad was just like every other dad, until the day I worked my first Sunday Brunch" Be prepared for the second half of the book to shock you emotionally. It goes from a funny eye rolling recount of childhood, transitioning into being an adult child with rapidly aging parents. The second half was particularly heartwarming and sweet. Of course there's still som...
